Freakazoid may very well be the only great show to have ever been originally aired on the WB Network. Sure there was Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain but Freakazoid was much less annoying and never ended up as a pet for Elmira from Tiny Toons.

As the WB was in it’s adolescent years struggling to appeal to every demographic possible their after school cartoons were it’s bread and butter. Steven Spielberg was on a roll executive producing and presenting ridiculous cartoons thus Freakazoid was born.

The show revolved around teenage computer nerd Dexter Douglas and his super hero alter ego Freakazoid. Back when the internet was still 56k and new territory for television and film Dexter’s cat (Mr. Chubbikins) jumped on Dex’s keyboard and accidently typed in a formula causing the computer to suck Dexter into the internet and for some reason changing him into Freakazoid a mildly retarded super hero.

What makes Freakazoid so great is that you can tell that the writers and everybody involved were just having fun with the project. It’s as if Steven Spielberg sat them down at a meeting and said “Okay you guys have a TV show now go do whatever you want”. A lot of the humor was based off of pop culture references that would easily go over the top of children’s heads and admittedly loosely strung together storylines. Over all its just a fun show for the sake of being fun. Thankfully it is now out on DVD so go pick it up you won’t regret it, unless you consider yourself either too smart, cool, or mature to watch children’s programming.
